This weekend I was reading a Patagonia catalogue (their short articles are as terrific as their clothes).
I came across a quote that really resonated with me:
“For me the most fun of climbing was bivouacking: getting up on a wall and sleeping in god-awful conditions, in hammocks or just hanging from your ropes all night trying to sleep. You really get into the rhythm of the wall. It’s all about the process, not the goal.” Yvon Chouinard
I won’t pretend to be a “climber”. Nope. Love the outdoors, hiking, canoeing, etc.. Climbing large rock facades hasn’t been my thing yet.
What struck me about this quote is the idea of “getting into the rhythm” of doing something. Appreciating the PROCESS versus forging through something only focused on the end result.
You’re trying to lose weight, can hardly wait to wear those smaller size jeans. Working hard on a project at work, excited for the grand finale rollout of it, your kids are acting up, you can hardly wait for them to relax and enter into a new calmer stage of life… ahh, the list goes on.
You take your pick. Anyway you look at it, it’s all about the goal and not the process.
So, take a moment, check in and see if there’s somewhere you can realign your thinking. (I bet there is.)
When you find this place, take a deep breath and gently think to yourself: what’s happening here that’s already wonderful. What do I already have that I can appreciate about _____(you fill in the blank).
Wishing you lots of moments of enjoying the Process!
