This One Simple Step Can Help You Overcome the Hungries and Give Your Body & Life More Energy!

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

Hello! I’m sitting here eating a terrific raw food snack: Gojiberry Granola by Two Moms in the Raw.

You know why I’m eating it?

Well, yes because I’m hungry, but it goes beyond that.

It’s because I ate my breakfast today while driving.

No, I’m not very proud to admit this, but it’s the truth.

I ate while driving my kids to school (not a good idea).

I thought it would be more efficient to eat while I was doing something else, that way when I returned to my office I could get a good early start to my work day.

Ever do this?

Guess what happens when you do 2 or more things at once, like eating and driving, eating and reading or eating and watching TV.

Your food doesn’t digest very well. Your brain is focused on the other activity you’re engaged in and NOT the eating part.

So, your food arrives down in your stomach and intestines and they kind of look at your food and say, what the heck are you doing here?

You’re brain doesn’t have time to tell them the food is coming.

Being ill prepared your typical digestive enzymes aren’t available and therefore, you have all sorts of food that goes through your system not properly digested.

This can lead to indigestion, bloating, gas, or if you’re lucky enough to bypass these symptoms, chances are you’ll end up feeling hungry an hour or two later.

So, that’s where I’m at, feeling hungry again, when I normally would be feeling fine.

So, while this isn’t my normal practice to eat on the go, it is a great reminder to stay present to my food when I’m eating.

When I do, I feel GREAT- happy, calm, energized, clear thinking and comfortably full!

Want to experience some of this for yourself?

Try eating mindfully, paying special attention to your food -not the tv, your book or the road! =)

And, yes, I understand, we don’t live in a perfect world where it’s possible every single time you eat, but, try it a few times a week when it’s more feasible.

Getting in the habit of this will have your body and mind feeling great and yes, your life will follow!

Enjoy!

Want More Free Time? Try This.

So, I signed up for a book study at my sons’ school.

It was a book study that centered around parenting.

I knew the book being studied was one with many treasures of information that would support my husband and I in making terrific choices for our family.

BUT, and this is a huge but, part of me wanted so dearly to participate- that’s the learn, grow and “fix it” part of me.

Then there was this other side of me, the side that said- “You are already busy with other obligations, to try to squeeze in reading another book and participating in the study right now would not be helpful or wise.”

I kept hearing: “You need MORE downtime Andrea, not more to dos…”

My “downtime” voice was louder then my “do it” voice, so last minute, I crossed my name off the book study list.

So, at first it was easy, I went about my business as I always do, feeling thankful I made a decision to do one less thing.

Then came the first day of the book study.

I heard people talking about it, carrying their books around, and suddenly I was stricken with a feeling of guilt.

I found myself thinking, “Andrea, couldn’t you have squeezed this in? It would have been so helpful to learn more.”

Then, shortly after having this thought, I reminded myself that NO, participating in this study would not have served me or my schedule well.

And, as a matter of fact it would have probably strongly impacted my parenting skills in a NEGATIVE way- being rushed to accomplish one more thing and unavailable to spend time with them due to having too much on my plate.

Now, I’ve been down this road before- it’s not fun for anyone involved AND is actually the exact opposite of what the proposed book I would have studied is about- “simplicity parenting”.

So, in the end, I’m happy with myself for drawing the line and saying “no”.

To do this is freeing, liberating and reminds us that WE are in charge of our lives vs. our lives being in charge of us.

Next time you’re asked to do something that doesn’t feel comfortable from a time perspective- exercise that “No Thank You” muscle, you might experience some guilt, but, when the guilt fades you’ll be left with more time- a wonderful commodity these days!
